About the Silk Grey Glass and Black Combination

Of the three two-tone Contido combinations, this is the most subtle. Where white glass against black is a hard monochrome contrast and champagne against black is a warm-cool opposition, silk grey and black are two points on the same scale – a soft light grey stepping down to a deep near-black. The wardrobe reads as a gradation rather than a collision, which gives it a quieter, more considered quality than either of the others.

That tonal relationship is what makes it work in rooms the other two would fight. A hard black-and-white front needs a scheme confident enough to carry it. This one does not – the grey softens the transition to the dark frame, so the wardrobe has definition without demanding the room be built around it. If you liked the idea of a framed two-tone wardrobe but found white-and-black too stark, this is the version to look at.

The two-tone versions are produced in glass only, and a mid tone is where glass shows its value most clearly. Grey shows the quality of its surface more than a white does, since unevenness reads as patchiness rather than as a flaw at the edges – so genuine glass gives the colour a depth and uniformity a coated panel cannot match, with light moving across the surface rather than stopping at it. Against a black frame, that movement is what stops the front looking flat.

Silk Grey itself is a soft, light grey with a gentle warmth – not the cold, blue-tinged grey that dated so quickly in the last decade, and not so pale that it reads as an off-white. Against a black carcase that faint warmth becomes more visible than it is on a single-colour wardrobe, because the eye has something to measure it against.

The handle choice is genuinely interesting here, because there is no obvious default. Black ties the handles to the carcase, so the dark elements read as one frame and the grey front stays uninterrupted – the most cohesive option. Aluminium is closest in tone to the silk grey doors, which makes it the most seamless choice on the front itself. Chrome is the only one that stands apart from both colours, adding a bright line that sharpens what is otherwise a deliberately soft composition. Chrome and black are priced the same.

Glass, or Glass with Mirror

Both front options are genuine glass, so the choice is simply whether you want a mirror built into the wardrobe.

Glass gives an unbroken silk grey front, with the depth and evenness that glass brings to a mid tone.

Glass with Mirror adds mirrored panels. Grey and mirror is a softer pairing than white and mirror – the grey holds its own beside the reflection rather than disappearing into it, so the front stays balanced rather than becoming one bright plane. With a black frame containing the edges, it is arguably the most sophisticated combination in the range.

Interior and Construction

Contido sits in Rauch Orange Plus, and the difference between this and a standard sliding wardrobe is almost entirely in what comes as standard rather than what you pay extra for. Contido includes the premium interior package in the price: a set of two sliding door dampers, an interior drawer, and a wardrobe interior division – three upgrades most manufacturers charge separately for, and the three most people end up wanting.

The dampers are the one you notice daily. Sliding doors without them can be pushed shut hard and land with a bang; a damped door draws itself closed over the last few centimetres and settles quietly. On a glass or mirrored front that matters twice over, since a slammed glazed door is a genuine risk as well as a noise.

The interior drawer and the division do the organisational work. A drawer inside a wardrobe keeps small items contained rather than piled on a shelf, and the vertical division splits a compartment so shorter garments can hang above shelving instead of wasting the full drop. Together they are the reason a Contido wardrobe usually removes the need for a separate chest of drawers.

A Passepartout frame is available as an optional extra, with or without integrated lighting – a surround fitted across the top and both sides of the wardrobe, closing the gap to the ceiling and walls to give a built-in appearance. On a wardrobe already framed in black, it extends that framing to the room itself.

Contido is 100% Made in Germany and carries both the Blue Angel and the Golden M – Blue Angel being an independently verified low-emission certification, which is worth having on a large piece of furniture in a room you sleep in. Rauch Orange Plus is the brand's durable, high-specification line, and the wardrobe is backed by a 10-year manufacturer guarantee.

For a longer wall, this combination is also produced as a 3 door sliding wardrobe in 240cm, 270cm and 300cm widths. Contido is also made with white glass fronts for a sharper monochrome, or champagne glass for a warmer two-tone – both with the same black carcase. Single-colour versions are available in Silk Grey, White, Champagne and Black.

FAQs

Which parts are silk grey and which are black?
The door fronts are silk grey glass; the carcase is black. The sides, top and the edges around the doors are dark, framing the grey front. Because the two tones sit on the same scale rather than in opposition, the result is a gradation rather than a hard contrast.

Is a matt décor front available in this combination?
No. The two-tone Contido wardrobes are produced in glass only – either plain glass or glass with mirror. If you want a matt finish, the single-colour silk grey version offers a décor front.

How does it compare with the other two-tone options?
This is the most subtle of the three. White and black is a hard monochrome contrast, graphic and demanding of the room. Champagne and black is a warm-cool opposition. Silk grey and black is the quietest, and the easiest to place in a room that is not built around the wardrobe.

Is it real glass?
Yes. The fronts are genuine glass, not a printed or lacquered panel. On a mid tone the difference is particularly visible – glass gives the grey depth and a uniform surface, with light moving across it rather than stopping at it.

Should I choose glass or glass with mirror?
Both are genuine glass, so the question is only whether you want a mirror built into the wardrobe. Grey and mirror is a softer pairing than white and mirror, since the grey holds its own beside the reflection rather than disappearing into it – so the mirrored option here stays balanced rather than becoming one bright plane.

Is Silk Grey warm or cool in tone?
It sits on the warmer side of neutral – a soft light grey rather than a cold, blue-tinged one. Against a black carcase that warmth is more visible than it is on a single-colour wardrobe, because the eye has something to measure it against.

Which handle should I choose?
There is no obvious default here. Black ties the handles to the carcase for the most cohesive result. Aluminium is closest in tone to the doors and the most seamless on the front itself. Chrome is the only one that stands apart from both colours, sharpening an otherwise soft composition. Chrome and black are priced the same.

Will the black carcase show inside the wardrobe?
Yes – the carcase colour runs through to the interior, so the inside of this wardrobe is black rather than grey. Worth knowing if you would prefer a lighter interior, in which case the all silk grey version would suit you better.

What is included in the premium interior?
Three items that most manufacturers charge extra for, included as standard: a set of two sliding door dampers, an interior drawer, and a wardrobe interior division. They come with the wardrobe at every width.

What are the dimensions?
Height 223cm, depth 68cm including the doors, with 56cm usable inside. Width is your choice of 160cm, 180cm or 200cm, giving two compartments of 80cm, 90cm or 100cm respectively. Check your ceiling height before ordering and allow room above for the wardrobe to be raised into position during assembly.

What is a Passepartout frame?
An optional surround fitted across the top and both sides of the wardrobe. It closes the gap to the ceiling and walls, giving a built-in, fitted appearance rather than a freestanding one. It is available with or without integrated lighting, at additional cost.

What delivery options are available?
Free delivery is included. Our professional assembly service is available at additional cost, where our fitters build the wardrobe in your chosen room.

Is it available in other sizes?
Yes. This combination is also produced as a 3 door sliding wardrobe in 240cm, 270cm and 300cm widths.

Can I cancel or change my order?
No. This wardrobe is made to order by Rauch to your selected specification, including width, front option and handle finish, so once the order has been processed it cannot be cancelled or amended. Please check your measurements and selected options carefully before ordering.

What guarantee does it come with?
Rauch provide a 10-Year Manufacturer Guarantee, subject to their warranty terms.

How Professional Assembly Works

Step 1

Choose Your Wardrobe

Browse our wardrobe collections and choose the size, finish and configuration that works for your bedroom.

Step 2

Select Your Delivery Service

Where available, select Professional Delivery & Assembly from the delivery options shown directly on the product page.

Step 3

Prepare the Room

Make sure the room and access route are clear and that sufficient floor and ceiling space is available for safe assembly.

Step 4

We Take Care of the Rest

Our specialist team will deliver, assemble, position and check your wardrobe before completing the handover.

Preparing Your Room for Assembly

Large wardrobes normally need to be assembled flat before being carefully raised into their final position. Preparing the room before the delivery team arrives is therefore essential.

  • Ensure the room has sufficient clear floor space for the wardrobe to be assembled lying flat.
  • Allow approximately 20cm of clearance around the wardrobe footprint where possible.
  • Allow approximately 15–20cm of ceiling clearance above the finished height of the wardrobe.
  • Ensure access routes, doorways, hallways and stairs are clear and suitable for the wardrobe components to be safely carried into the room.
  • Remove furniture and other items that may obstruct the assembly area.
  • Consider radiators, light fittings, low ceilings, sloping ceilings and other permanent obstructions that could prevent safe assembly.
  • Our wardrobes are freestanding and the assembly team may require access around the furniture during installation.
Important: If our assembly team arrives and the room or access route is not suitable for safe delivery and assembly, they may be unable to complete the service. The assembly charge may still apply where the service cannot be completed because sufficient access or assembly space has not been provided.

What Happens If Damage Occurs During Assembly?

When you choose our Professional Delivery & Assembly service, the installation is carried out by our specialist assembly team.

If accidental damage occurs to your wardrobe during assembly, the assemblers will report the damage to us so that we can arrange the appropriate replacement part.

We normally aim to order the replacement part within approximately 48 hours of receiving the relevant information from the assembly team.

Please be aware that many of our wardrobe parts are manufactured and supplied from Germany. Replacement components may therefore take a similar lead time to the original order before they arrive with us and can be arranged for fitting.

This is one of the key benefits of selecting professional assembly: if accidental damage occurs during installation by our team, we take responsibility for resolving the issue.

Assembly by the Customer

If your wardrobe is supplied as Delivery Only, it will normally arrive flat-packed with the components and assembly instructions required to build the furniture.

Wardrobe assembly clearance guide showing approximately 20cm working space around the wardrobe

Large wardrobes normally need to be assembled flat before being carefully raised into their final position. We strongly recommend checking all components before beginning assembly and making sure there is sufficient room to work safely around the wardrobe.

  • Check all packs before beginning assembly.
  • Confirm that all required components are present.
  • Check that no components appear damaged before assembly begins.
  • Use at least two people for safe assembly and lifting.
  • Allow approximately 20cm of working clearance around the wardrobe where possible.
  • Ensure there is enough clear floor space to assemble the wardrobe flat.
  • Check the available ceiling height before lifting the wardrobe upright.
Please note: Damage caused during customer self-assembly is not treated in the same way as accidental damage caused while our professional team is carrying out the assembly service.

Delivery Times for Professional Assembly

Orders with Professional Delivery & Assembly are delivered by a specialist assembly team. This can mean the delivery time is slightly longer than the standard delivery estimate shown for delivery-only orders.

Please allow approximately 6–8 weeks for orders requiring Professional Delivery & Assembly.

Assembly Within 40 Miles of BB9

If you are located within approximately 40 miles of our BB9 postcode, we may be able to provide an additional assembly service for selected wardrobes that would otherwise be supplied as Delivery Only.

Availability and pricing for this local service should be confirmed with our team before delivery.
