About the Aurelia in Metallic Grey
Despite the name, this is not a mid grey. Metallic Grey is a deep graphite — considerably closer to black than to silver, and in most rooms it reads as a near-black rather than a grey at all. If you have been searching for a dark or black sliding wardrobe, this is the colourway, and the slight softness in the tone is usually what people actually want in a bedroom rather than a true black.
On a design this plain, that darkness is what gives the wardrobe its character. Each door divides into three horizontal panels by fine recessed lines, and on a pale finish those lines are barely visible — on graphite they become the only thing catching light on the front, fine bright edges running across a dark plane. The same is true of the aluminium edge profiles down each door: against white they disappear, against near-black they read as two deliberate vertical lines.
There are no applied handles. The aluminium edge profile is what you grip to slide the door, so nothing projects from the front at all. On a dark wardrobe that produces a genuinely architectural result — an uninterrupted graphite plane with nothing but shadow lines and metal edges on it.
It needs the right room. Against white or off-white walls, pale flooring and a restrained palette, a near-black sliding front looks deliberate and expensive. In a small or north-facing bedroom it will absorb light the room cannot spare, and the white version will serve you considerably better.
One honest note: dark finishes show fingerprints and dust more readily than pale ones. A dry cloth is all it needs, but on a large sliding front it will want attention more often than white or champagne would.
Sliding doors are the practical half of the design. Nothing swings into the room, so the wardrobe can sit opposite a bed, beside a doorway or in a narrow room without losing usable floor — and at the wider sizes, where a hinged wardrobe would need the better part of a metre of clear space in front of it, that becomes the deciding factor.
Three Widths
All three sizes have two sliding doors; what changes is the width and how the interior is divided behind them.
175cm gives two compartments of 87.5cm — the right proportion for a standard double bedroom, and the most compact of the three. At this width the dark finish reads as an accent rather than a statement, so it works in rooms where the wider versions would be too much.
218cm opens the two compartments out to 109cm each. That is unusually generous: wide enough for a full season's coats or a long run of dresses in one section, without the rail being divided.
261cm divides into three compartments of 87.5cm behind the two doors. For two people sharing this is the one to have — a compartment each with a third for bedding, luggage or out-of-season clothing. In Metallic Grey it is also the most dramatic: two and a half metres of unbroken near-black needs a room with light to spare, but where it works the effect is considerable.
Every compartment, at every width, has a height-adjustable shelf and a hanging rail, so the balance between hanging and folded storage is yours to set rather than the factory's.
At 210cm high and 59cm deep, Aurelia fits a standard modern bedroom without needing a specialist ceiling height, and the depth means garments hang square on the rail rather than pressing against the sliding doors.
German Build at a Sensible Price
Aurelia sits in the Rauch Blue range – Rauch's value line, where the brief is reliable quality and good value rather than premium specification. What it is not is a budget wardrobe dressed up: it is 100% Made in Germany and carries both the Blue Angel and the Golden M.
Blue Angel is an independently verified low-emission certification, which is worth having on a large piece of furniture in a room you sleep in. The Golden M is Germany's independent furniture quality mark. Both are external certifications rather than the manufacturer's own claims, and most wardrobes at this price carry neither.
Other Options
If you would like a mirror, the same wardrobe is produced as a metallic grey sliding wardrobe with a full-height mirror panel set into one door — worth considering on a dark colourway, since the mirror returns light the graphite absorbs.
Aurelia is also made in White, the brightest of the range, Champagne, a soft faintly golden neutral, and Artisan Oak, a mid-toned wood effect with pronounced grain.
Matching bedside tables and chests of drawers are available from the same collection.

FAQs
Is this wardrobe grey or black?
Metallic Grey is a deep graphite rather than a mid grey – considerably closer to black, and in most rooms it reads as a near-black. If you are looking for a dark or black sliding wardrobe, this is the colourway.
Is it too dark for my bedroom?
It depends on the light rather than the floor area. Against white or off-white walls and pale flooring with reasonable natural light, it looks deliberate and expensive. In a small or north-facing room it will absorb light the room cannot spare – the white version would serve you better, or the mirrored version of this one.
Does it show fingerprints and dust?
More readily than the paler finishes. A dry cloth is all it needs, but on a large sliding front it will want attention more often than white or champagne would.
Are there handles?
No applied handles. Slim aluminium profiles run the full height of each door edge, and these act as the grip when sliding the doors. Against a near-black front they read as two deliberate vertical lines.
What does the front look like?
Two sliding doors, each divided into three horizontal panels by fine recessed lines. On graphite those lines are the only thing catching light on the front, which gives the wardrobe a genuinely architectural result.
How many doors does it have?
Two sliding doors at every width. The wider sizes give more internal compartments behind those two doors rather than additional doors.
Which width should I choose?
175cm gives two compartments of 87.5cm and keeps the dark finish as an accent. 218cm widens them to 109cm each. 261cm divides into three compartments of 87.5cm – the best arrangement for two people sharing, and the most dramatic in this colour.
What is inside the wardrobe?
Every compartment has one height-adjustable shelf and one hanging rail. Because the shelf adjusts, you can raise it for full-length coats and dresses or lower it to add folded storage.
Is there a version with a mirror?
Yes. The same wardrobe is produced with a full-height mirror panel set into one of the two doors – well worth considering on a dark colourway, since the mirror returns light the graphite absorbs.
What is the Rauch Blue range?
Rauch's value line – functional, well-designed furniture made in Germany, combining reliable quality with good value. It carries the same Blue Angel and Golden M certifications as the rest of the brand.
How deep is it?
59cm, which allows garments to hang square on the rail without pressing against the sliding doors.
Why choose sliding doors?
Nothing swings out into the room, so no floor space is lost in front of the wardrobe. At the wider sizes a hinged wardrobe would need close to a metre of clear floor before a door could open.
Is it available in other colours?
Yes. Aurelia is also made in White, Champagne and Artisan Oak.
What delivery options are available?
Free delivery is included. Our professional assembly service is available at additional cost, where our fitters build the wardrobe in your chosen room and remove the packaging.
How long will it take to arrive?
Dispatch is 4 to 6 weeks — quicker than most German wardrobes. This is a dispatch timeframe rather than a delivery date, as the wardrobe is built to your specification in Germany and then shipped to the UK.
Can I cancel or change my order?
No. This wardrobe is made to order by Rauch to your selected specification, so once the order has been processed it cannot be cancelled or amended. Please check your measurements and selected width carefully before ordering.
How do I look after the surfaces?
The surfaces are easy to maintain and should be cleaned with a dry cloth only.
