What a Passepartout Frame Does
A Passepartout frame is a surround that fits across the top and down both sides of the wardrobe, closing the gap between the furniture and the room. Instead of a wardrobe standing against a wall with daylight visible above it and a shadow line down each side, you get a defined border — and the wardrobe reads as built in rather than delivered.
It is the single most effective thing you can add to a freestanding wardrobe. Fitted wardrobes look fitted largely because there is no gap around them; a Passepartout produces the same effect on furniture you can take with you when you move. On a wardrobe that already fills most of one wall, that difference is considerable.
The frame also tidies up the things people notice after delivery — the dust shelf that forms on top of a wardrobe, the uneven gap where a wall is not quite square, the bit of skirting that stops the unit sitting flush. The surround covers all of it.
With Light, or Without
With integrated light the top section of the frame carries lighting that washes down the front of the wardrobe. In a bedroom at night that changes the room rather than just the furniture — the wardrobe becomes a light source, and on a mirrored or glass front the effect is particularly good, since the light has a reflective surface to work with. It is also genuinely useful: enough light to find something in the wardrobe without turning on the main ceiling light.
Without light gives you the same framed, built-in appearance with nothing to wire in. It is the simpler option and the one to choose if there is no convenient socket, or if you would rather keep the lighting in the room separate from the furniture.
Ordering and Fitting
The frame is sized to the wardrobe, so select the width that matches yours — 181cm or 271cm. A frame for one width will not fit the other.
You can order it separately at any time, whether you are buying an Elara wardrobe now or already own one. It is produced in the same German factory as the wardrobes, so the 8 to 10 week dispatch timeframe is the same — worth knowing if you are adding it later, as it is not an item that arrives in a few days.
If you are buying the wardrobe and the frame together, order both at the same time so they arrive on the same delivery and can be fitted in one go. Fitting a Passepartout to an already-assembled wardrobe is possible but considerably more work than doing it during the original installation.
