About the Metallic Grey Décor Finish

If you have been looking for a black sliding wardrobe, this is the darkest matt option in the Forms range and in most rooms it will read as black. Metallic Grey is a deep graphite – dark enough that the distinction largely vanishes under lamplight or against a white wall, but with enough grey in it to avoid the severity that true black brings to a bedroom. Most customers searching for black find this is closer to what they actually wanted.

What sets this version apart from the glass alternative is the surface. Matt décor has no sheen at all, so a dark colour behaves quite differently: instead of reflecting light back the way a glossy black does, it absorbs it, giving the doors a soft, almost suede-like depth. On a wardrobe this size the effect is calm rather than dramatic – the dark front reads as a considered architectural plane rather than a statement piece.

That restraint has a practical benefit too. Dark reflective surfaces are notorious for showing fingerprints and dust in raking light, and on a large wardrobe that means frequent attention. A matt dark finish is markedly more forgiving. It is the sensible choice for a family bedroom, or anywhere the wardrobe sits opposite a window where a shiny surface would catch the light at inconvenient times of day.

The alternative is worth understanding before you decide. The same wardrobe is offered with basalt tempered glass fronts, a near-identical dark tone in genuine glass. Glass gives the colour a lacquered depth and movement across the surface, which is striking on a dark shade; décor gives stillness and easier maintenance, at a lower price. The carcase, interior, handles, mechanism and dimensions are identical on both, so the choice is entirely about how you want the doors to behave.

Both are also produced with a mirrored centre door, which on a dark wardrobe is worth serious thought – metallic grey décor with mirror or basalt glass with mirror. A full-height mirror at the centre breaks up the run and returns light that a dark front absorbs, and on a matt finish that lift matters more than it does on glass.

Metallic Grey suits rooms with light to spare. Against white or off-white walls, pale flooring and a restrained palette, the contrast is deliberate and architectural. Chrome and brushed steel sit naturally with it; brass gives a warmer, more dramatic result. In a small or north-facing bedroom, a lighter colour from the Forms range – or the mirrored version of this one – will do more for the space.

One detail to know before ordering: the base plinth is supplied in Silk Grey on every Forms wardrobe, including this one. Against a near-black front that lighter band at the base is clearly visible – a deliberate design decision by Rauch, grounding the unit at floor level. It is more noticeable on the dark finishes than on the light ones, so it is better known now than discovered on delivery.

Each door front is made up of four panel elements rather than one continuous sheet. On a matt dark colour that structure does real work, giving the doors a subtle horizontal rhythm where an unbroken sheet would read as a slab. Practically, panel construction is a considerable advantage on delivery day: a 229cm door in a single piece is extremely awkward to carry up a staircase or round a landing, whereas panels are manageable.

The bar handles are colour-matched to the wardrobe, so they read as part of the door rather than an applied fitting. On a dark matt front that keeps the appearance clean, where a contrasting metal handle would draw the eye to the fixings instead of the finish.

Doors run on the Rauch Easy-Slide system, engineered for a smooth and quiet action. Sliding doors are the practical choice wherever floor space is limited: nothing swings out into the room, so the wardrobe can sit opposite a bed, beside a doorway or in a narrow room without losing usable floor. At 271cm wide that becomes the deciding factor for many bedrooms – a hinged wardrobe of the same width would need close to a metre of clear floor before a door could open.

The interior differs between the two heights, and it is worth weighing carefully. The 210cm model gives one storage shelf and one hanging rail per compartment. The 229cm model gives two shelves and one rail per compartment – across three compartments that is a substantial increase in folded storage rather than a marginal one. If your ceiling height allows for the taller model, it is the better use of the same footprint.

Widths of 203cm and 271cm cover most bedroom walls, dividing internally into three equal compartments of 67.5cm or 90cm respectively. At 62cm deep the wardrobe holds standard hangers comfortably while keeping its footprint modest. Surfaces need nothing more than a dry wipe.

Forms belongs to the Rauch Orange range and is built to the same German factory standard as the rest of the brand – 100% Made in Germany, carrying both the Blue Angel and the Golden M seals. Blue Angel is an independently verified low-emission certification, meaningful for a large piece of furniture in a room you sleep in, and the Golden M is Germany's recognised furniture quality mark. Matching bedside tables and chests of drawers are available from the same collection.

Internal Storage Layout

  • Three equal compartments: Each measuring 67.5cm wide on the 203cm model, or 90cm wide on the 271cm model
  • 210cm height: Every compartment is fitted with 1 storage shelf and 1 full-width hanging rail
  • 229cm height: Every compartment is fitted with 2 storage shelves and 1 full-width hanging rail, giving noticeably more folded storage across the wardrobe
  • Left compartment: Shelving in the upper section with a full-width hanging rail beneath for coats, dresses, shirts and suits
  • Centre compartment: Identical arrangement to the left compartment
  • Right compartment: Identical arrangement, giving three separate hanging sections rather than one continuous run
  • Adjustability: Shelves and hanging rails can be positioned to suit your own storage, so one section can be set for full-length garments while another is given over to folded items
  • Depth: 62cm external depth throughout, accommodating standard hangers across all three compartments

FAQs

Is this wardrobe black or grey?
Metallic Grey is a very dark graphite. In most rooms – particularly against pale walls or under artificial light – it reads as black, and it is the darkest matt finish available in the Forms range. In strong daylight you can see it is a deep charcoal rather than a pure black. If you are looking for a black sliding wardrobe, this is among the closest options we offer, and most customers find the slight softness preferable to a true black in a bedroom.

What is the difference between the décor and glass versions?
Décor is a matt panel finish with no sheen – softer, more forgiving of fingerprints, and the lower-priced of the two. The basalt glass version is a near-identical dark tone in genuine tempered glass, which gives a lacquered depth and movement across the surface. The carcase, interior, handles, mechanism and dimensions are identical on both.

Does a dark matt finish show dust and fingerprints?
Far less than a dark glossy or glass one. Matt surfaces do not catch marks in raking light the way reflective surfaces do, which makes this the more practical dark finish for a busy bedroom. The surfaces clean with a dry cloth.

Is a mirrored version available?
Yes, and on a dark wardrobe it is worth considering. The Forms 3 door is produced with a mirrored centre door in both finishes – metallic grey décor with mirror and basalt glass with mirror. A full-height mirror at the centre breaks up the dark front and returns light to the room.

Is a dark wardrobe too much for a small bedroom?
It depends on the light rather than the floor area. Metallic Grey works well against white or off-white walls and pale flooring in a room with reasonable natural light. In a small or north-facing bedroom, a lighter colour from the Forms range – or the mirrored version of this one – will generally serve the space better.

What colour is the base plinth?
Silk Grey, as on every Forms wardrobe. Against the dark metallic grey fronts this is clearly visible as a lighter band at the base of the unit. It is a design feature of the range rather than a fault or a variation.

How long will it take to arrive?
Dispatch is 8 to 10 weeks. This is a dispatch timeframe rather than a delivery date: the wardrobe is built to your specification in Germany and then shipped to the UK. Occasionally items arrive sooner, and during German factory holiday closures it can take slightly longer.

Can I cancel or change my order?
No. This wardrobe is made to order in your chosen size and configuration, so once the order has been processed with Rauch it cannot be cancelled or amended. Please check your measurements and selected options carefully before ordering.

What delivery service is included?
Free delivery is included with this wardrobe. Full details of the delivery and assembly options available, along with the clearance you will need, are set out in our Assembly Service information.

Which height should I choose?
The 229cm model gives two storage shelves per compartment against one on the 210cm model – across three compartments that is a substantial difference in folded storage. If your ceiling height allows for the taller version, it is the better use of the same footprint.

How wide is each internal compartment?
The interior divides into three equal sections. On the 203cm model each compartment is 67.5cm wide; on the 271cm model each is 90cm. Every compartment has its own shelving and hanging rail.

Will it fit up my stairs and into the room?
Each door front is made up of four panel elements rather than a single full-height sheet, which makes the components considerably easier to carry through doorways, up staircases and around landings than a wardrobe of this size would normally be. It is still worth checking your access allows for the carcase panels, particularly on the 229cm height.

What guarantee does it come with?
Rauch provide a 10-Year Manufacturer Guarantee, subject to their warranty terms.

Is there matching bedroom furniture?
Yes. Coordinating bedside tables and chests of drawers are available from the same collection.

How do I look after the surfaces?
The surfaces are easy to maintain and should be cleaned with a dry cloth only.

  • Each wardrobe must be assembled flat on the ground before being lifted into place — for example, a wardrobe measuring 250 cm wide x 215 cm high will require approx. 270–280 cm x 235–245 cm of clear space for assembly.
  • Ensure ceiling height allows for at least 15–20 cm of clearance above the final product.

Who are Home of Wardrobes?
Heritage & Trust

Home of Wardrobes is part of Pendle Village and Pendle Village Furniture.

Pendle Village has been established since 1997, operating from our large showroom in Lancashire and serving customers across the UK.

Pendle Village Furniture was launched over two years ago as our dedicated online furniture store, allowing customers nationwide to access our ranges with ease.

Home of Wardrobes is our newest specialist website, created exclusively for premium German wardrobes, sliding door wardrobes UK, and high-quality bedroom furniture.

We proudly invite our valued customers to leave reviews on Google and Trustpilot as we continue building this dedicated wardrobe brand.

Our promise is simple: quality wardrobes at competitive prices, backed by knowledgeable service and nearly three decades of furniture expertise.

Are the times shown on the product page delivery times?
Dispatch Times

No — the timeframes shown on each product page refer to dispatch times, not delivery times.

Many wardrobes are manufactured in Germany (including Rauch and Wiemann). Dispatch may occasionally vary slightly due to factory demand, production capacity, or seasonal closures. Sometimes items may also arrive earlier than expected.

During National Holidays — particularly Christmas — German factories close, so please allow additional time for dispatch.

How quickly are orders processed?
Order Processing

All orders are processed within 24 hours.

Weekend orders are processed Monday. Bank Holiday orders are processed the next working day (usually Tuesday).

What delivery and assembly services are available?
Delivery & Assembly

Delivery Only – Flat-packed with instructions. Assembly available within 40 miles of BB9 (additional charge).

Delivery + Paid Assembly – Nationwide professional assembly (additional fee).

Delivery & Free Assembly – Premium in-home assembly included (also available in Northern Ireland).

Please check the service icons on the product page before ordering.

Do you deliver across the UK?
Coverage

We deliver across England, Wales and Scotland. Delivery services vary by product — please refer to the product listing.

Are your wardrobes made to order, and can I cancel?
Made to Order

Many wardrobes are made to order in your chosen size, finish and configuration.

Once production has begun, cancellations or changes cannot be accepted. Please ensure measurements and specifications are correct before ordering.

What if my item arrives damaged?
Damages

Please email info@homeofwardrobes.co.uk within 48 hours of delivery with clear photographs of the affected areas.

We’ll arrange replacement parts directly with the manufacturer. Replacement parts may take a similar timeframe to the original dispatch.

What warranty is included?
Warranty

Rauch Wardrobes – Manufacturer warranty covering material and manufacturing defects under normal household use. Selected ranges include extended guarantees.

Wiemann Wardrobes – 2-year manufacturer’s warranty covering materials and workmanship under normal residential use.

Please retain your proof of purchase.

Do you accept returns?
Returns

We accept returns within 14 days in line with our Returns & Exchange Policy. Please refer to the full policy for details.

What if anything is missing from my order?
Missing Parts

If any parts are missing, please contact us as soon as possible and we will arrange replacements directly with the manufacturer. As our wardrobes and components are produced in Germany, replacement parts may take a similar timeframe to the original dispatch period. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee immediate delivery, as production, international shipping, and UK route scheduling all need to be completed first. Once the parts arrive at the UK hub, the courier will contact you to arrange delivery. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
